Waddah Alward

Iraq

Waddah Alward (وضاح الورد), born on May 14, 1938, in Baghdad, Iraq, was a prominent Iraqi artist renowned for his contributions to impressionist art. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in 1959 with a diploma in painting and sculpture. In 1961, he became a member of the Iraqi Artists Association, and in 1992, he joined the Iraqi Artists Syndicate. In 1998, he became part of the Iraqi Impressionists Group.

Alward's artistic style was characterized by a unique blend of impressionism and geometric abstraction. He was particularly known for his depictions of Baghdad's narrow alleys and urban landscapes, capturing the essence of the city's architecture and atmosphere. His eighth solo exhibition in 1999 at the Arts Center marked a significant point in his career, showcasing his distinctive approach to portraying Baghdad's urban scenes.

Throughout his career, Alward held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Baghdad, other Arab countries, and Auckland, New Zealand. His final exhibition in 2013, titled "Remnants of the Harvest in Baghdad, Capital of Arab Culture," featured over 100 artworks representing various stages of his artistic journey. Alward passed away on June 28, 2015, after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire the Iraqi art scene.
