Tayseer Barakat

Palestine, b. 1959

Tayseer Barakat (born 1959, Gaza, Palestine) is a prominent Palestinian artist known for his evocative paintings, drawings, and mixed-media works that explore themes of memory, displacement, and the human condition. Barakat’s practice is characterized by expressive, gestural brushwork and a palette often dominated by earthy tones, reflecting both the landscape and the emotional tenor of his homeland. His work frequently incorporates symbolic motifs drawn from Palestinian heritage, ancient civilizations, and personal experience, creating a visual language that resonates with both local and international audiences.

Barakat studied at the Alexandria University in Egypt and has exhibited widely in the Middle East and beyond. Notable institutional exhibitions include solo and group shows at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Sharjah Art Museum, and the Palestinian Museum. His works have also been featured in significant regional art events such as the Alexandria Biennale and the Cairo Biennale. On the secondary market, Barakat’s paintings have appeared at major auction houses including Christie’s and Bonhams, where they have attracted attention from collectors of modern and contemporary Arab art. Barakat continues to live and work in Ramallah, contributing to the cultural landscape of Palestine through both his artistic practice and his involvement in the local art community.
