Serge Poliakoff

Russia, b. 1900–1969

Serge Poliakoff (1900–1969) was a Russian-born painter who became a prominent figure in the School of Paris and is celebrated for his contributions to abstract art. Born in Moscow, Poliakoff left Russia in 1918, eventually settling in Paris in 1923, where he immersed himself in the city’s vibrant artistic milieu. Initially trained as a musician, he gradually shifted his focus to painting, developing a distinctive style characterized by interlocking, irregular color fields and a nuanced exploration of form and space. His mature works are marked by bold, harmonious compositions that reflect his deep interest in color theory and abstraction.

Poliakoff’s paintings have been widely exhibited in major institutions, including solo exhibitions at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Kunstmuseum in Basel. His work was also featured in the Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel, affirming his international stature. In the art market, Poliakoff’s paintings have achieved significant results at leading auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, with several works surpassing the million-dollar mark, underscoring his enduring appeal among collectors. Today, Serge Poliakoff is recognized as a key figure in postwar European abstraction, with his works held in the collections of major museums worldwide.
