Iraq, b. 1972

Mothanna Al-Obaidi, born in 1972 in Ramadi, Iraq, is a distinguished calligrapher and artist renowned for his mastery of Arabic calligraphy. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Baghdad in 1995 and was mentored by the esteemed calligrapher Abbas Al-Baghdadi. Al-Obaidi's artistic journey is marked by a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary styles, particularly in the Thuluth and Naskh scripts. His work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including a personal exhibition in Sharjah in 2009, held under the patronage of HRH Prince Sultan Al-Qasimi, and another in Luxembourg in 2017. Throughout his career, Al-Obaidi has received several prestigious awards, including first prize in Thuluth script at the Fourth International Competition (Hamad Allah Al-Amasi) in Istanbul in 1998, the Iraqi Innovation Award for Iraqi Art in 1999, the Burda Prize for Arabic Calligraphy in Abu Dhabi in 2009, and the Okaz Prize for Islamic Art in 2010.
