Mohammed Mandour

Egypt, b. 1905–1965

Mohamed Mandour, born in 1950 in Al-Fustat, Old Cairo, is a distinguished Egyptian potter renowned for his contributions to modern ceramics in the Middle East. Growing up in a neighborhood celebrated for its traditional pottery, Mandour began his artistic journey in the local kilns, mastering the craft from a young age. In 1967, he joined an atelier in Helwan founded by painter Safia Helmy and sculptor Mohamed Hagrass, where he developed a unique style inspired by Pharaonic and Islamic pottery forms. Mandour's work is characterized by its smooth, fluid forms and the use of red clay, creating pieces that range from functional vessels to decorative wall art. His innovative approach has earned him numerous accolades, including the ceramic prize from the French Cultural Center in 1979, first prize at the Friends of Fine Arts Society exhibition in 1981, and the appreciation prize from the National Egyptian Society for Fine Arts in 1992. Internationally, he was honored at the Venice Biennale in 2002. ([almasargallery.com](https://almasargallery.com/mohamed-mandour/?utm_source=openai))

Mandour's works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in England, the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy, and the Museum of Egyptian Modern Art in Cairo. He has also exhibited extensively, with notable solo shows like "The Potterist" at Al Masar Gallery in 2009. In 2025, the Farouk Hosny Foundation for Culture and Arts unanimously nominated him for its Grand Merit Award, recognizing his significant impact on Egyptian cultural life.
