Iraq

Mahmoud Fahmi, born in 1962 in Babylon, Iraq, is a distinguished contemporary artist known for his evocative depictions of Iraqi life and architecture. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Kharkov Fine Art Institute in Ukraine in 1997, where he specialized in academic impressionist painting under the tutelage of prominent Soviet-era artists. Fahmi's artistic style blends realism with elements of magical realism and romanticism, often portraying Baghdad's shanashil (traditional wooden balconies), narrow alleys, and the Tigris River. His works frequently feature the Baghdadi woman, capturing her beauty and essence. He has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including solo shows in Sharjah in 2014 and Toronto in 2016. In 2013, he received the first prize at the Emirates Fine Arts Society's annual exhibition for his painting "Khatun Dijla." After years abroad, Fahmi returned to Iraq in 2023 to present his fourth solo exhibition, "Boulevard Baghdad," at The Gallery in Baghdad. The exhibition showcased 26 large oil paintings and seven sketches, reflecting his deep connection to his homeland. Fahmi's works are celebrated for their ability to evoke nostalgia and preserve the cultural heritage of Iraq through a contemporary lens.
