About the work

Dense bamboo fronds fill the canvas in a layered composition of painted and collaged newspaper leaves, rendered in vivid greens, yellows, and unexpected flashes of blue. Ink lines drip freely downward against a pale washed ground, giving the work an energetic, spontaneous mood.

About the artist

Khalid El Bekay

Morocco

Khalid El Bekay (b. 1966, Casablanca) is a Moroccan artist who lives and works between Barcelona and Casablanca. He trained at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan and at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona, specialising in engraving. Working largely through delicate paper collage on wood, he brings together Mediterranean and Moroccan visual traditions in pared-down still lifes. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections including the Royal Palace of Morocco and the Girona Watercolour Museum.
