Iman Ali

Iraq, b. 1962

Iman Ali Khaled, born in 1962 in Baghdad, Iraq, is a Kurdish painter renowned for her dynamic and textured artworks that blend traditional Arabesque elements with contemporary Western art movements. Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad from 1979 to 1984, she was influenced by the radical modernism of Jewaad Seleem. Post-graduation, she worked as a free painter and theatrical costume designer for the Iraq Fashion House, consciously distancing herself from the regime's propaganda art. Following the Iraq Wars, she relocated to Amsterdam, where she embraced greater artistic freedom. ([artcommunicators.com](https://artcommunicators.com/artist/iman-ali-khaled/?utm_source=openai))

Khaled's paintings are characterized by multiple layers, each narrating a distinct story. She often incorporates materials like sand or silicone to create three-dimensional color spaces, resulting in sculptural canvases. Her palette ranges from warm yellows and reds to deep blues, with recurring motifs such as eyes, hands, mouths, and faces symbolizing interpersonal relationships. Beyond paintings, she crafts sculptural works from various materials, reflecting the complexities of human life and social dynamics. Throughout her career, Khaled has exhibited extensively. Notable solo exhibitions include "A Special World" (1992) and "The Kiss" (1993) at the Baghdad Art Institute, as well as shows at De Balie in Amsterdam (1997) and Gallery Foresight in Amman, Jordan (2004). Her works are part of numerous corporate and private collections across Europe and the Middle East, including the Ibrahimi Collection. Additionally, her art has been featured in auctions at Bonhams in London. ([artcommunicators.com](https://artcommunicators.com/artist/iman-ali-khaled/?utm_source=openai))
