El Dessouki Fahmi

Egypt, b. 1938–2024

El Dessouki Fahmi (1938–2024) was an Egyptian painter, writer, and translator whose multifaceted career spanned several decades. He graduated from the Department of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1963 and later earned a postgraduate diploma in Egyptology from Cairo University in 1973. Fahmi began his professional journey as an archaeological painter with the Egyptian Antiquities Organization before dedicating himself fully to art and literature in the early 1990s. Fahmi's artistic oeuvre is characterized by dynamic oil paintings and colored wax drawings that draw inspiration from nature and ancient Egyptian art. His works often depict forms imbued with the vitality and spirit of Egypt's rich heritage. In addition to his visual art, Fahmi was a prolific writer and translator, contributing to Egyptian newspapers and magazines since the late 1950s. He translated a diverse array of literary works, including several by Franz Kafka, such as "Amerika," "Letters to Milena," "The Metamorphosis," and "The Giant Mole." Throughout his career, Fahmi's art was showcased in various exhibitions, including a notable solo exhibition at Picasso Art Gallery in Cairo from February 7 to 27, 2023. His contributions to the art world were recognized posthumously when the 60th Cairo Salon honored his legacy by displaying some of his works in October 2024.
