Egypt, b. 1949

Awadallah El Shemi, also known as Awad El Shimy, is an Egyptian artist born in Cairo in 1949. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Department, in 1973 and earned his Ph.D. in Fine Arts in 1987. In 2001, he became a professor of graphic arts at Helwan University. El Shemi has held 17 solo exhibitions and participated in 75 group exhibitions, representing Egypt in 50 international shows. His works are part of official collections in several countries. He has received prestigious international awards, including the Fredrikstad Triennial in Norway (1992), the Havířov Biennial in Czechoslovakia (1992), and the Jury Prize at the Sharjah Biennial (1993).
