Anish Kapoor

United Kingdom, b. 1954

Anish Kapoor (born 1954, Mumbai, India) is a British-Indian artist renowned for his innovative use of materials and exploration of form, space, and perception. Since the late 1970s, Kapoor has worked across a variety of mediums, including sculpture, installation, and public art, often employing materials such as pigment, stone, stainless steel, and wax. His signature style is characterized by abstract, often monumental forms that challenge viewers’ spatial awareness, as seen in iconic works like "Cloud Gate" (2004) in Chicago and "Sky Mirror" (2001). Kapoor’s fascination with voids, reflective surfaces, and the interplay of light and color has positioned him as a leading figure in contemporary art.

Kapoor has exhibited extensively at major institutions worldwide, including solo exhibitions at the Tate Modern (London), the Royal Academy of Arts (London), the Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao), and the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston). He represented Britain at the 44th Venice Biennale in 1990, where he was awarded the Premio Duemila, and won the Turner Prize in 1991. Kapoor’s works are held in prominent public and private collections globally.

At auction, Kapoor’s sculptures and installations have achieved significant results at major houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Notably, his stainless steel works and pigment pieces have fetched prices exceeding several million dollars, reflecting his status in the international art market. Kapoor continues to live and work in London, maintaining a profound influence on the evolution of contemporary sculpture.
