Zainab Abdelhamid

Egypt, b. 1919–2002

Zainab Abdelhamid (زينب عبد الحميد, also transliterated as Zeinab Abdel Hamid) was a prominent Egyptian painter born in 1919 and active until her passing in 2002. Renowned for her vibrant use of color and expressive brushwork, Abdelhamid was a key figure in the Egyptian modern art movement. Her work often depicted scenes of daily life in Egypt, urban landscapes, and interiors, rendered in a style that blended elements of post-impressionism and local visual traditions. Abdelhamid was also known for her contributions to art education, serving as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, where she influenced generations of young Egyptian artists.

Throughout her career, Abdelhamid participated in numerous significant exhibitions both in Egypt and internationally. Her works have been showcased at major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in Cairo and have been included in important group exhibitions highlighting the evolution of Egyptian modernism. On the secondary market, her paintings have appeared at reputable auction houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where they have attracted attention from collectors interested in Middle Eastern modern art. Abdelhamid’s legacy endures as a pioneering female artist whose oeuvre reflects both the spirit of her era and the enduring richness of Egyptian visual culture.
