About the work

A faceless human silhouette viewed from behind is overlaid with alternating bands of Arabic calligraphy and pale grey paper panels, set against a warm linen-toned ground with bold black accents. The composition evokes themes of identity and text, merging the human form with the written word in a quietly contemplative layered collage.

Qatar

Yousef Ahmed (يوسف أحمد), born in 1955 in Doha, Qatar, is a pioneering Qatari artist recognized for his innovative approach to painting and mixed media. He is particularly noted for his experimental use of local materials, such as palm fronds and handmade paper, which reflect his deep engagement with Qatari heritage and landscape. Ahmed’s work often explores the intersection of tradition and modernity, blending Arabic calligraphy with abstract forms to create a distinctive visual language that resonates with both regional and international audiences.

Ahmed has exhibited extensively in major institutions, including the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, where his works are part of the permanent collection. His art has also been featured in significant group exhibitions that highlight the evolution of Gulf and Arab contemporary art. In addition to his institutional presence, Yousef Ahmed’s works have appeared at reputable auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, achieving notable results that underscore his standing in the Middle Eastern art market.

Throughout his career, Ahmed has played a vital role in shaping Qatar’s contemporary art scene, both as an artist and as an academic. He has contributed to the development of art education in Qatar and remains an influential figure in the region’s cultural landscape.

Mixed media

Works combining two or more materials — paint, collage, found objects, text, sand — in a single piece. The approach lets artists layer meaning and material, and is widely used in modern and contemporary MENA art.

Calligraphic Abstraction

Also known as Hurufiyya, this movement reimagines Arabic letters as pure abstract form — a defining current of modern Arab art that fuses centuries of calligraphic heritage with contemporary abstraction.
