Yassin Mohamadawi

Iraq

Yassin Mohamadawi (1955–2002) was an Iraqi artist renowned for his innovative techniques and deep engagement with Mesopotamian heritage. Born and raised in the marshlands of Iraq, he pursued his passion for art by studying in the United Kingdom, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cardiff College, University of Wales, in 1989, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma from Southampton College. In 1983, he received a scholarship to study in Italy, where he completed his master's degree. Mohamadawi spent the last 13 years of his life in Jordan, passing away in 2002 at the age of 47. Mohamadawi's work is distinguished by his unique approach to materials and his deep connection to Iraq's ancient civilizations. He often incorporated elements such as clay, chemicals, and mud alongside acrylics, creating pieces that evoke the textures and aesthetics of Babylonian, Assyrian, and Sumerian art. His subjects frequently included rural Iraqi life, birds, animals, children, and calligraphy. His process involved sculpting the painting, then subjecting it to various treatments like washing, burying in mud, smudging with salt, and even burning, aiming to establish a dialogue between the artwork and the earth. He also crafted his own paints using natural materials like clay, algae, coffee, salt, and grass, resulting in artworks that appeared as though they emerged directly from the land. Throughout his career, Mohamadawi's art was celebrated for its ability to bridge ancient traditions with contemporary expression. His works have been exhibited in various galleries, including the Orient Gallery in Amman, Jordan. His legacy continues to inspire, reflecting a profound reverence for Iraq's rich cultural history and a commitment to exploring new artistic frontiers.
