Iraq

Wasmaa Al-Agha (1954–2015) was an Iraqi artist and academic renowned for her vibrant depictions of women, capturing the essence of Baghdad's cultural life. Born in Baghdad, she demonstrated artistic talent early, holding her first solo exhibition at fourteen. Al-Agha earned a BA from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad in 1981, followed by an MA in 1987 and a PhD in 1996, both focusing on Islamic art. She served as a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad from 1981 to 1990.

Her work often centered on the female form, portraying women in various facets of Iraqi life with rich colors and expressive compositions. Al-Agha's notable exhibitions include "From Baghdad to Baghdad... Visual Visions" at Al-Orfali Gallery in Baghdad in 2002 and "Oasis of Love" at Broadway Gallery in Amman in 2008. She also participated in the Baghdad International Biennale in 1988. Beyond painting, she authored several books, such as "Genesis and Its Plastic and Aesthetic Elements in Al-Wasiti's Miniatures" (2000) and "Abstract Realism" (2007), reflecting her scholarly engagement with art history.

Al-Agha's contributions to Iraqi art were widely recognized, earning her accolades like the Planning and Colors Award in London in 1975. She passed away on May 9, 2015, in Amman, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
