Egypt, b. 1915–2007

Vessela Farid (1914–2007) was a Belgian-born artist who became a significant figure in Egyptian art after relocating to Egypt in 1938. Her work is renowned for its authentic portrayal of Egyptian life, particularly focusing on women in rural settings. Farid's paintings are characterized by their figurative style, capturing the essence of her subjects with a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of local culture. Her use of earthy and pastel tones, occasionally punctuated by vibrant colors, reflects the landscapes and traditions of Egypt's countryside.

Throughout her career, Farid participated in numerous exhibitions, both in Egypt and internationally. Notably, her works were showcased at the Zamalek Art Gallery in Cairo, where a posthumous exhibition in 2011 highlighted her extensive collection, including previously unseen pieces. Her paintings have been praised for their refusal to succumb to romanticized Orientalist perspectives, instead offering genuine representations of Egyptian life. Farid's art continues to be celebrated for its authenticity and contribution to modern Egyptian art.
