Thaer Helal

Syria, b. 1967

Thaer Helal (ثائر هلال), born in Syria in 1967, is a prominent contemporary artist recognized for his innovative approach to abstraction and mixed media. Helal’s work is characterized by dynamic compositions that blend painting, collage, and digital techniques, often exploring themes of urban transformation, memory, and the interplay between chaos and order. His distinctive visual language employs layered textures, gestural marks, and a nuanced color palette, reflecting both his Syrian heritage and broader global influences.

Helal has exhibited extensively in the Middle East and internationally. Notably, his works have been featured in institutional exhibitions such as the Sharjah Biennial and at the Sharjah Art Museum, where he has contributed to the region’s contemporary art discourse. He has also participated in group and solo exhibitions at venues including Ayyam Gallery in Dubai and Beirut, which has played a significant role in promoting his art to a wider audience. In addition to his exhibition record, Helal’s paintings have appeared in major auctions at Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving strong results and affirming his status in the regional and international art markets.

Based in the United Arab Emirates for much of his career, Thaer Helal continues to influence younger generations of artists through both his practice and his academic role at the University of Sharjah. His ongoing exploration of materiality and form positions him as a significant figure in contemporary Syrian and Arab art.
