Tawfiq Al Saied

Jordan, b. 1939

Tawfiq Sayed (1939–1996) was a Jordanian artist renowned for his versatility across painting, sculpture, printmaking, and caricature. He adeptly navigated between Cubism and abstraction, employing diverse media such as oil paints, watercolors, gouache, Chinese ink, and zinc engraving. His works are characterized by bold expressiveness and strong draftsmanship.

Born in Safad, Palestine, Sayed's family relocated to Jordan following the Nakba. He pursued his art education at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid from 1971 to 1975. Upon returning to Jordan, he contributed to the art community as a teacher and art supervisor with the Department of Culture and Arts in Amman and later taught at the Institute of Fine Arts.

Sayed's artistic journey included notable exhibitions such as a solo show at the British Council in Jordan in 1968 and participation in the Cairo International Biennale in 1984. His works, including pieces like "Untitled" (1982) and "Bedouin Portrait" (1982), reflect his profound engagement with both local and universal themes.
