Sumaya Al-Baghdadi is an Iraqi ceramic artist born in Basra. She developed a passion for art from a young age, participating in numerous school exhibitions. Her journey into ceramics began in 1981 during her studies at the Institute of Fine Arts, where she was captivated by the pliability of clay and its potential for creative expression. This medium allowed her to craft forms that reflect the rich heritage and natural beauty of her hometown.

Al-Baghdadi's work predominantly explores themes of motherhood, fertility, and the cultural legacy of Basra. She often incorporates motifs such as the palm tree, symbolizing generosity and resilience, into her pieces. Her creations serve as a bridge between the past and present, aiming to preserve and celebrate Iraq's ancient ceramic traditions. To ensure the continuity of this art form, she conducts workshops for children, teaching them to create pottery and inscribe their names in cuneiform script, thereby instilling a sense of pride and connection to their cultural roots.

Throughout her career, Al-Baghdadi has participated in numerous exhibitions, both within Iraq and internationally. She has showcased her work at the Iraqi Artists Association exhibitions and the Al-Mirbad Poetry Festival. Additionally, she has held five solo ceramic exhibitions in Basra and participated in exhibitions abroad, including in Lebanon. Her dedication to the art of ceramics and her efforts to educate the younger generation underscore her commitment to preserving Iraq's artistic heritage.
