Suliman Mansour

Palestine, b. 1947

Suliman Mansour (سليمان منصور), born in 1947 in Birzeit, Palestine, is a leading figure in contemporary Palestinian art. Renowned for his evocative paintings, drawings, and mixed-media works, Mansour’s art is deeply rooted in the Palestinian experience, often depicting rural landscapes, olive trees, and symbolic figures such as the steadfast peasant woman. His style blends elements of realism and symbolism, employing earthy tones and textured surfaces, sometimes incorporating materials like mud and straw to emphasize connection to the land.

Mansour’s work has been widely exhibited in major institutions, including the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, and the Sharjah Art Museum. He was a founding member of the New Vision group in the 1980s, which sought to develop a distinctly Palestinian visual language. His art has also been featured in significant international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale, highlighting his role in representing Palestinian identity on the global stage.

At auction, Suliman Mansour’s works have appeared at major houses including Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving strong results that reflect his stature in Middle Eastern art. Notably, his paintings have been included in Christie’s Dubai sales, where they have attracted considerable collector interest. Mansour continues to live and work in Palestine, remaining a vital voice in the region’s cultural landscape.
