Steven Sorman

Spain

Steven Sorman, born in 1948 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is an American artist renowned for his intricate multimedia paintings, drawings, and prints. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota in 1971. Sorman's work is characterized by complex compositions that masterfully weave together themes, lines, layers, media, and colors, inviting viewers to engage deeply with each piece.

His art has been featured in numerous prestigious institutions, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Sorman has also held solo exhibitions in the United States, Singapore, and Sweden. Notable accolades include the Bush Foundation Artist's Fellowship in 1979, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Merit World Print III Award in 1980, and the Rockefeller Foundation American Center Artist in Residence in Paris in 1982.

In the art market, Sorman's works have been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $23 to $7,200, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 1999, the record price for this artist at auction is $7,200 for "FROM AWAY," sold at Sotheby's New York in 2000. As of 2025, Sorman continues to live and work in Red Wing, Minnesota.
