Souad AlAttar

Iraq, b. 1942

Souad Al-Attar (سعاد العطار), born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1942, is a prominent Iraqi artist recognized for her evocative paintings that blend elements of Mesopotamian heritage with contemporary themes. Working primarily in oil and mixed media, Al-Attar’s art is characterized by its dreamlike compositions, vibrant color palettes, and symbolic references to Iraqi folklore and mythology. Her distinctive style often merges figurative and abstract elements, reflecting both nostalgia for her homeland and the complexities of exile.

Al-Attar has exhibited internationally, with solo and group shows at major institutions such as the British Museum in London and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. Her works have been featured in significant exhibitions of modern Arab art, underscoring her status as a leading figure in the Iraqi and Middle Eastern art scenes. Notably, her paintings have achieved strong results at reputable auction houses, including Christie’s and Bonhams, where her pieces have attracted collectors interested in modern Arab art.

Throughout her career, Souad Al-Attar has remained deeply connected to her Iraqi roots while living in exile, particularly in London. Her contributions have been instrumental in shaping the narrative of modern Iraqi art, and her works are held in both public and private collections worldwide.
