Serwan Baran (سيروان باران), born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1968, is a prominent contemporary artist recognized for his evocative paintings and mixed-media works that often explore themes of conflict, memory, and the human condition. Baran’s practice is rooted in figuration, with a distinctive style marked by expressive brushwork and a somber palette, reflecting the psychological and social aftermath of war in Iraq and the broader Middle East. His works frequently depict anonymous figures, military motifs, and fragmented narratives, serving as powerful meditations on trauma and resilience.

Baran has exhibited widely in reputable institutions and international biennials. Notably, he represented Iraq at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019 with the solo presentation "Fatherland," curated by Tamara Chalabi and Ala Younis, which garnered significant critical attention. His work has also been shown at the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, further cementing his status in the global art scene. In the auction market, Baran’s paintings have appeared at major houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving strong results and affirming his position among leading Iraqi contemporary artists. He currently lives and works in Beirut, Lebanon, continuing to contribute to the discourse on art and conflict in the region.
