Seif Wanley — Oil On Paper , 35 × 25 cm (representative image)
Seif Wanley

Egypt, b. 1906–1979

Seif Wanly (سيف وانلي), born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1906 and passing in 1979, is recognized as a pioneering figure in modern Egyptian art. Alongside his brother Adham Wanly, Seif played a crucial role in introducing modernist trends to the Egyptian art scene during the mid-20th century. He was known for his vibrant use of color and expressive brushwork, working primarily in oil painting but also producing works on paper. Wanly’s subjects often included scenes of daily Egyptian life, the theater, and ballet, reflecting both local culture and broader cosmopolitan influences.

Wanly’s work has been featured in significant institutional exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo and the Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts, both of which hold examples of his work in their permanent collections. Internationally, his paintings have appeared in group exhibitions that chart the evolution of modern art in the Arab world. At auction, Seif Wanly’s works have been offered by major houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, with notable sales highlighting the enduring appeal and historical importance of his oeuvre. His legacy endures as a cornerstone of Egyptian modernism, bridging European artistic movements with Egyptian themes and sensibilities.
