Sayed Waked

Egypt

Sayed Waked, born in May 1976 in Giza, Egypt, is a distinguished sculptor specializing in contemporary glass art. He graduated from the Faculty of Specific Art Education at Cairo University in 1998 and is a member of the Syndicate of Fine Artists. His rural upbringing profoundly influenced his artistic vision, fostering a deep appreciation for nature and experimentation with various materials. After graduation, Waked worked as a designer in a flame-powered glass factory, where he honed his skills in glass forming, engraving, and decoration. Since 2007, Waked has dedicated himself entirely to glass sculpture, creating works that range from pure abstraction to personalized forms. His pieces often feature transparent or opaque glass, enhanced with colors, silver, and gold accents. Waked views glass as a medium to express collective human emotions and relationships, emphasizing its transparency and transformative qualities. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, including five solo shows and over 36 group exhibitions, with international participation in Italy, Bulgaria, and Turkey. His sculptures are part of esteemed collections, such as the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, the Ministry of Culture in Egypt, and the British and Czech embassies in Cairo. In April 2024, Waked presented his sixth solo exhibition, "My New Game," at Picasso Art Gallery in Cairo. The exhibition featured 17 colored glass sculptures inspired by the concept of "building blocks," reflecting on the simplicity and complexity of life. This body of work underscores Waked's innovative approach to glass sculpture and his commitment to exploring profound humanistic themes through his art.
