About the work

A sunlit doorway opens into a shadowed alleyway flanked by rough mud-brick walls, with stone steps visible within and dramatic contrasts of light and dark defining the scene. The heavily textured surface lends a tactile, almost sculptural quality to this intimate portrayal of traditional Egyptian architecture.

Egypt

Sayed Mohamed Sayed (1931–2013) was an Egyptian visual artist renowned for his evocative paintings that often depicted architectural forms, particularly rural and desert dwellings. Born in Cairo, he spent his early years in the neighborhoods of Khalifa, Darb Al-Ahmar, and Helmiya. His artistic journey began at the age of nine, drawing on walls and decorating ceilings in his local community. By sixteen, he apprenticed in foreign workshops, learning painting techniques and color mixing under Italian experts. Sayed's work was characterized by simplicity and a harmonious blend of colors, capturing the essence of Egyptian architecture and landscapes. He held numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at the Gezira Youth Center (1966–1967), the German Cultural Center (1966), and the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art. His art was also featured internationally, notably at the Museum of Modern Art in East Germany (1966) and in Spain (1982). His pieces are part of collections in institutions such as the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art in Cairo, the Suez Canal Authority, the Cairo Opera House, and the National Bank of Egypt. His works are held in private collections both within Egypt and internationally, reflecting his significant contribution to the Egyptian art scene.
