Jordan

Samir Salama (سمير سلامة) was a prominent Palestinian artist, born in 1944 in Tarshiha, Palestine, and later associated with the Jordanian and broader Arab art scenes. Salama was best known for his work in painting, particularly in oil and mixed media, exploring themes of memory, displacement, and the Palestinian experience. His style evolved from figurative to abstract, often characterized by vibrant color fields and expressive brushwork that evoke both landscape and emotion.

Salama’s works have been exhibited in major institutions across the Arab world and internationally. Notably, he participated in exhibitions at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, reflecting his significant standing in contemporary Arab art. His paintings have also appeared in important group shows highlighting Palestinian and Middle Eastern artists, further cementing his reputation.

In the auction market, Samir Salama’s works have been featured at reputable houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, with sales recorded in their Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art auctions. These milestones underscore his recognition among collectors and institutions alike. Salama passed away in 2018, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence artists and audiences interested in the intersection of art and identity in the Middle East.
