Salam Kanaan

Jordan, b. 1963

Salam Kanaan, born on April 2, 1963, in Irbid, Jordan, is a distinguished artist known for his impressionistic depictions of Jordanian and Palestinian landscapes and cityscapes. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Yarmouk University in 1987 and pursued a Master's degree at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1993. Kanaan's work is characterized by a deep connection to historical cities such as Amman, Salt, Nablus, and Jerusalem, capturing their essence through paintings and ceramics.

Throughout his career, Kanaan has held numerous solo exhibitions, including "Return to Salt" in 1996, "Amman the Capital" in 2002, and "We Are the Sky" in 2012. His international presence includes exhibitions at Bernanos Gallery in Paris in 1992 and Blue Bar Gallery in 1993. In 1991, he won first prize in a competition at Mairie de Cannes in France. His works are part of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts' collection, featuring pieces like "Amman My City" (2016) and "The Harvest" (1988).

In 2004, Kanaan established the Salam Kanaan Gallery on Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman, transforming it into a vibrant cultural hub that combines art exhibition with a café ambiance. The gallery showcases his artworks alongside those of other artists, offering visitors a unique experience of Jordanian art and hospitality. In 2001, he published "30 Days in Jerusalem," a collection of watercolors reflecting his impressions of the city.
