Salah Taher

Egypt, b. 1911–2007

Salah Taher (صلاح طاهر), born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1911 and passing away in 2007, is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in modern Egyptian art. Renowned for his dynamic compositions and vibrant use of color, Taher’s work spans painting and drawing, often characterized by expressive abstraction and a lyrical approach to form. His artistic journey began with a focus on figurative subjects, later evolving into more abstract and semi-abstract styles that reflect both Egyptian heritage and universal themes.

Taher’s career was marked by significant institutional recognition. He served as the head of the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo and was also the director of the Opera House’s art department, contributing greatly to Egypt’s cultural landscape. His works have been exhibited in major institutions, including the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art and international venues such as the Venice Biennale. In the auction market, Salah Taher’s paintings have achieved notable results at leading houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, with several works surpassing estimates and confirming his status as a key figure in Middle Eastern art. His legacy endures through his prolific output and his influence on generations of Egyptian artists.
