Sajida AL Mashaikhi

Iraq

Sajida Al-Mashaikhi, an esteemed Iraqi artist born in Baghdad's Karkh district, was renowned for her contributions to ceramics and painting. A graduate of Queen Alia College with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, she was an active member of the Iraqi Artists Association and served as an instructor at the Institute of Fine Arts. Her artistic journey, spanning from the 1980s until her passing, was marked by a deep engagement with Baghdad's cultural heritage, often depicting its architecture, women, and traditional scenes.

Throughout her career, Al-Mashaikhi held numerous solo exhibitions, including her inaugural show at Al-Riwaq Gallery in 1985, followed by displays at Orfali Gallery the same year, and multiple exhibitions in Amman, Jordan, during the 1990s. Her 21st and final retrospective exhibition, titled "Baghdadiyat," was inaugurated in February 2020 at the Ministry of Culture's General Directorate of Arts in Baghdad. This exhibition showcased approximately 84 works, encompassing ceramics, paintings, and a four-meter turquoise mural that encapsulated her previous creations. The event was graced by the Minister of Culture, who lauded her for drawing inspiration from Iraq's rich artistic traditions.

Al-Mashaikhi's artistic style was deeply rooted in the Baghdadi school, reflecting influences from prominent Iraqi artists like Jawad Saleem. Her works often portrayed the essence of Baghdad's neighborhoods, women, and heritage, employing a blend of warm and cool colors to bridge the past and present. In recognition of her significant contributions, she received the Creativity Award in Ceramics from the Ministry of Culture in 2003, among other accolades. Her legacy endures through her evocative representations of Baghdad's cultural tapestry.
