Sadok Gmach (1940–2024) was a pioneering Tunisian painter renowned for his contributions to contemporary art in Tunisia. Born on August 2, 1940, in Takrouna, a Berber village perched atop a small mountain, Gmach's early environment deeply influenced his artistic sensibilities. He began painting in the late 1950s, drawing inspiration from both European artists like Pierre Boucherle and Amedeo Modigliani, and Tunisian painters such as Yahia Turki, Jalel Ben Abdallah, Ammar Farhat, and Zoubeir Turki.

In 1962, seeking to break away from the folkloric tendencies of the preceding generation, Gmach co-founded the "Groupe des Six" alongside artists Nejib Belkhodja, Lotfi Larnaout, Nja Mahdaoui, Fabio Roccheggiani, and Carlo Carrachi. This collective aimed to express the modern Tunisian spirit with greater freedom and to position Tunisian art on the international stage. Gmach's work is characterized by a unique blend of abstraction and figuration, often depicting scenes of daily life, traditions, and vibrant interiors. He predominantly used acrylic paints to create compositions that resonate with the cultural and historical essence of Tunisia.

Throughout his career, Gmach participated in numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally, showcasing his art in cities like Tunis, Geneva, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich. His dedication to the arts was further exemplified by his role as the director of Galerie Yahya in Tunis, where he organized various exhibitions. In 2020, he held his final exhibition at Galerie Mosaïque in Cité Ennasr. Gmach's legacy was honored posthumously with a retrospective titled "Sadok Gmach: Récit d’un parcours 1940-2024" at the Maison des Arts in Belvédère from September 28 to October 19, 2024, celebrating over six decades of his artistic journey.
