Sadik Kwaish

Iraq, b. 1960

Sadik Kwaish Alfraji (b. 1960, Baghdad, Iraq) is a prominent contemporary Iraqi artist known for his evocative multimedia practice, which spans drawing, painting, video, and installation. Alfraji’s work often explores themes of memory, exile, and the complexities of identity, drawing on personal and collective histories shaped by displacement. His distinctive visual language is characterized by expressive, monochromatic imagery and a narrative approach that reflects both the trauma and resilience of the Iraqi experience.

Alfraji has exhibited widely at major international institutions. Notable exhibitions include his participation in the 56th Venice Biennale (2015) as part of the Iraq Pavilion, as well as solo shows at the British Museum in London and the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in the Netherlands. His works are held in significant public and private collections, including the British Museum and the Barjeel Art Foundation. In the auction market, Alfraji’s pieces have appeared at leading houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where his works on paper and mixed media compositions have attracted attention from collectors of Middle Eastern contemporary art.

Currently based in the Netherlands, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji continues to engage with themes of diaspora and longing, maintaining a strong connection to his Iraqi heritage while contributing to global contemporary art discourse.
