Sabry Ragheb

Egypt, b. 1920–2000

Sabry Ragheb (صبري راغب, also transliterated as Sabri Ragheb), born in Egypt in 1920 and passing in 2000, was a prominent Egyptian painter recognized for his contributions to modern Egyptian art. Ragheb’s oeuvre is characterized by a mastery of oil painting, with a particular focus on portraiture and figurative compositions that often reflect Egyptian social life and cultural identity. His style blends classical techniques with a modern sensibility, capturing both the individuality of his subjects and the broader atmosphere of his era.

Ragheb’s works have been exhibited in significant institutional settings, including the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in Cairo, which houses several of his paintings as part of its permanent collection. He participated in numerous national exhibitions throughout the mid-20th century, contributing to the flourishing Egyptian art scene during a period of cultural renaissance. His paintings have also appeared at major auction houses; notably, Christie’s and Sotheby’s have featured his works in sales of modern and contemporary Arab art, where they have attracted attention from collectors seeking key figures in Egyptian art history.

Throughout his career, Sabry Ragheb remained deeply engaged with the artistic community in Egypt, both as a practitioner and as a mentor to younger artists. His legacy endures through his evocative depictions of Egyptian life and his influence on subsequent generations of painters in the region.
