About the work

A dynamic composition of fragmented abstract forms bursts across a vivid green field divided by deep cobalt blue passages, animated by swirling motifs and accents of yellow, orange, and pink. The layered, energetic brushwork creates a sense of movement and complexity that draws the eye across the entire canvas.

Roua Bida

Tunisia, b. 1988

Roua Bida, born in Sfax, Tunisia, in 1988, is a visual artist, director, photographer, and feminist activist. She pursued her studies in visual and plastic arts at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis, where she honed her skills in photography and cinema. Bida's artistic practice is deeply intertwined with her activism, focusing on themes of gender equality and queer rights.

In 2015, she became actively involved with organizations advocating for equal human rights, including the Mawjoudin Association for Equality and the Chouf Feminist Association. Demonstrating her commitment to these causes, Bida founded the Honna Collective, a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of women and queer artists in Tunisia. Her work has been showcased in various exhibitions, notably at the Thessaloniki Queer Arts Festival in 2020, where she presented under the name Rû.

Bida's contributions to both the art world and activism have positioned her as a significant figure in Tunisia's contemporary art scene. Through her multidisciplinary approach, she continues to challenge societal norms and advocate for marginalized communities, using art as a powerful tool for social change.
