Roshde Iskander

Egypt, b. 1934–1991

Roshdy Iskander (رشدي إسكندر), born on April 23, 1918, in Cairo's Shubra district, was a prominent Egyptian painter known for his expressive depictions of Cairo's nightlife and performing arts scenes. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1942 and furthered his studies at the Institute of Ancient Egyptian Archaeology for two years. Iskander's artistic journey was deeply intertwined with Egypt's cultural milieu, capturing the vibrancy of popular neighborhoods like Al-Hussein and the dynamic performances at the Cairo Opera House.

Throughout his career, Iskander held 15 solo exhibitions in Egypt and six in the United States and Canada. His series titled "Cairo Nights" showcased over 266 oil paintings, illustrating performances by the Cairo Opera, the Reda Troupe for Folk Arts, and various international ballet companies. His works are characterized by swift, expressive lines and a rich palette that convey the rhythm and energy of dance and music. Notably, his paintings of the Reda Troupe's performances, such as "Rennet El-Kholkhal" and "Five Feddans," stand out for their dynamic composition and cultural authenticity.

Iskander's contributions to the art world were recognized with several awards, including the first prize in painting at the Cairo Salon in 1957 and four international medals. His works are part of esteemed collections, including the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art and the Theater Museum in the former Soviet Union. Beyond painting, he co-authored significant publications like "Fifty Years of Art" with Kamal El-Mallakh in 1960 and "Modern Egyptian Painting" in 1970. Iskander passed away in 1989, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate within Egypt's artistic heritage.
