Reda Farhan

Iraq, b. 1955

Reda Farhan, born in Baghdad in 1955, is a distinguished Iraqi sculptor known for his innovative approach to form and material. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Baghdad in 1997. Farhan's work is characterized by a fusion of traditional sculptural techniques with contemporary themes, often incorporating found objects to create pieces that are both thought-provoking and evocative. His sculptures frequently explore the human condition, utilizing the motif of the head to symbolize identity and existence. By integrating everyday materials, Farhan challenges conventional boundaries, infusing his works with a sense of irony and social commentary.

Throughout his career, Farhan has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Iraq and internationally. Notable among these is the 2014 exhibition "Mesopotamia" held at the Espace Le Scribe-L'Harmattan in Paris, where he showcased his sculptures alongside fellow Iraqi artists. His works have also been featured in the "Riding Fire" exhibition at Artika Gallery in London in 2008 and the "Iraq and Civilization" exhibition in Dubai in 2004. In 2019, he presented a collaborative exhibition titled "Anthem of Tragedy" at the Burj Babel Cultural Center in Baghdad, reflecting on the collective experiences of Iraqis during times of conflict.

Farhan's contributions to the art world have been recognized with several awards, including the second prize in the Ismail Fattah Al-Turk Competition in 2000 and the Wasiti Festival Award in 2010. His works are held in high regard for their ability to convey complex narratives through the interplay of form and material, solidifying his status as a pivotal figure in contemporary Iraqi sculpture.
