Egypt

Reda Abd Al Salam, born in 1947 in Suez, Egypt, is a prominent contemporary Egyptian artist known for his diverse artistic practices, including painting, drawing, graphic arts, sculpture, and collage. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1977 and earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Art in 1988. His artistic journey began as a press illustrator for "Al-Ahram" newspaper, where his illustrations accompanied the works of numerous Egyptian writers from the mid-1970s.

Abd Al Salam's work is characterized by a strong experimental approach, evident even in his black ink press illustrations, which showcase a bold use of space and heavy ink application. His paintings often depict bustling public spaces filled with indistinct human figures, focusing on movement and interaction rather than detailed facial features. This style blends realism with elements of surrealism and symbolism. In the 1980s, he shifted his focus to maritime scenes, portraying fishing boats, large ships traversing the Suez Canal, and sailing vessels, reflecting his deep connection to his hometown's coastal environment.

Throughout his career, Abd Al Salam has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in various group shows both domestically and internationally. Notably, in March 2023, the "Atelier of Arab Culture and Arts" hosted a retrospective exhibition titled "Fifty Years of Art" at the "Di Gallery" in Mohandessin, Cairo, featuring approximately 300 works spanning different phases of his artistic evolution. His contributions to the art world extend beyond his creations; he has authored several books on art, including "Contemporary Egyptian Painting" (2002) and "Drawings Between Journalism and Exhibitions" (2020).
