Turquoise Vase with Bronze Calligraphy Panels

Born in Iraq in 1963, Kasim Nayef is a distinguished ceramic artist whose work bridges traditional Iraqi heritage with contemporary aesthetics. Raised in a working-class family with limited exposure to art, Nayef's early interest in various artistic mediums, including painting and clay sculpture, led him to pursue formal education at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad in the mid-1980s, focusing on ceramic art. Under the mentorship of renowned Iraqi ceramicist Saad Shaker, Nayef honed his skills, learning to transform traditional porcelain into modern ceramic expressions.

After graduating in 1988, Nayef actively participated in local and national exhibitions, including the Baghdad International Festival of Art, where he garnered several first-place awards. His works are characterized by a deep connection to Iraq's ancient civilizations and natural environment, often incorporating earthy colors and textures that reflect the beauty of trees, rocks, and stars. The Dalloul Art Foundation holds several of his untitled ceramic sculptures from 2016, exemplifying his unique aesthetic that combines abstract forms with tactile surfaces.

In addition to his artistic practice, Nayef is committed to nurturing the next generation of artists. He serves as a professor of ceramic art at the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad, sharing his knowledge and passion with students. Despite the challenges faced by artists in contemporary Iraq, Nayef continues to produce and exhibit his work, contributing significantly to the country's rich artistic landscape.
