Princess Fahrelnissa Zaid

Jordan, b. 1901–1991

Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid (1901–1991) was a pioneering modernist painter of Turkish origin who later became associated with Jordan through her marriage to Prince Zeid bin Hussein. Renowned for her vibrant, large-scale abstract compositions, Zeid’s work spans painting, drawing, and printmaking, often characterized by bold color palettes and intricate, mosaic-like patterns. Her artistic practice bridged Eastern and Western influences, reflecting her cosmopolitan upbringing and extensive travels across Europe and the Middle East.

Zeid’s career was marked by significant institutional recognition. She held major solo exhibitions at venues such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (1954) and the Galerie Dina Vierny in Paris. In recent years, her legacy has been celebrated with retrospectives at the Tate Modern in London (2017) and the Istanbul Modern. Zeid’s works have achieved notable results at international auctions, with pieces sold at Christie’s and Sotheby’s, underscoring her enduring market appeal and historical significance. Her contributions to modern art have positioned her as a central figure in both Turkish and Middle Eastern art histories, celebrated for her innovative approach and cross-cultural impact.
