Philippa Hobbs, born in 1955, is a South African artist and art historian renowned for her contributions to printmaking and art education. She studied at the Johannesburg College of Art and completed a postgraduate printmaking course at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Hobbs served as a professor and Head of Printmaking at the Technikon Witwatersrand from 1979 to 1993. Her artistic practice encompasses various printmaking techniques, often exploring themes of human rights and social justice. Notably, her woodcut "Received by the Tongue" was part of the 1996 "Images of Human Rights" project, illustrating Clause 8: Freedom of Expression in South Africa's Bill of Rights.
