Omar Hamdi Malva

Syria, b. 1951–2015

Omar Hamdi, widely known by his artistic name Malva (عمر حمدي – مالفا), was a prominent Syrian painter born in 1951 in Al-Hasakah, Syria, and passed away in 2015. Malva’s career was marked by a dynamic engagement with painting, particularly in oil and mixed media, and his work is celebrated for its vibrant color palette and expressive, semi-abstract style. His compositions often reflect themes of human experience and cultural heritage, blending elements of Syrian identity with broader modernist influences.

Malva’s artistic journey took him from Syria to Vienna, Austria, where he established his reputation in the European art scene. He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at notable institutions, including the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (MAK). His works have also been acquired by several public collections, such as the National Museum of Damascus and the Barjeel Art Foundation. In the auction market, Malva’s paintings have appeared at major houses, including Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving significant results and affirming his status as one of the leading Syrian artists of his generation. His legacy endures through his distinctive visual language and his contributions to both Middle Eastern and international art.
