Nouri Al Rawi

Iraq, b. 1925–2014

Nouri Al Rawi (1925–2014) was a prominent Iraqi painter, art critic, and cultural figure, recognized as one of the foundational artists of modern Iraqi art. Born in Rawa, Iraq, Al Rawi was deeply influenced by the cultural heritage and landscapes of his homeland, which often appeared in his paintings. He worked primarily in oil on canvas, developing a distinctive style that blended elements of Iraqi folklore, symbolism, and abstraction. His compositions frequently explored themes of identity, memory, and the interplay between tradition and modernity.

Al Rawi played a significant role in Iraq’s artistic community, both as an artist and as a cultural administrator. He served as the director of the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad and was instrumental in promoting Iraqi art domestically and internationally. His works have been exhibited in major institutions, including the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad and in group exhibitions across the Arab world. Al Rawi’s paintings have also appeared at reputable auction houses such as Christie’s, where his works have attracted interest from collectors of Middle Eastern modern art, underscoring his enduring legacy in the region’s art market.

Throughout his career, Nouri Al Rawi contributed to the intellectual discourse on art in Iraq, publishing essays and critiques that shaped the understanding of modern Iraqi aesthetics. His legacy endures through his artworks, writings, and his influence on subsequent generations of Iraqi artists.
