About the work

A dense field of gestural black ink marks fills the composition, suggesting abstracted script or text, while two deep crimson watercolor forms emerge from the top and bleed downward through the centre. The aged beige paper and scattered ink drops lend the work a raw, meditative intensity.

Noureddine Daifallah

Morocco, b. 1960

Noureddine Daifallah, born in 1960 in Marrakech, Morocco, is a distinguished calligrapher and educator. He studied at the School of Applied Arts in Marrakech and the Regional Pedagogical Centre in Rabat, specializing in plastic arts. Currently, he serves as a professor of fine arts in Marrakech. Daifallah's artistic journey began with his first exhibition in 1977 at the age of 17. His work has since been showcased in Morocco, France, Italy, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates. In 1991, he was honored at the Istanbul Biennale and the 2nd Rencontre de la Jeune Peinture Marocaine at Espace Wafa Bank in Casablanca. Notably, the Guggenheim Museum in New York acquired two of his paintings in 2002. ([themajlisgallery.com](https://www.themajlisgallery.com/2012/09/noureddine-daifallahportfolio/?utm_source=openai))

Daifallah's innovative approach revitalizes traditional Arabic calligraphy by integrating contemporary elements. He replaces traditional ink with paint, focusing on the aesthetics of rhythmic alternation, loops, and ornamentations, often rendered in earthy tones. This fusion of classical and modern techniques breathes new life into the art form, earning him recognition in both the Arab world and Europe.
