Iraq

Nizar Yahya (b. 1963, Baghdad, Iraq) is a contemporary Iraqi artist recognized for his evocative mixed-media works that often explore themes of memory, conflict, and displacement. Yahya’s practice encompasses painting, drawing, installation, and artist books, characterized by a nuanced layering of materials and imagery that reflect his experiences of war and exile. His visual language frequently incorporates symbolic motifs and calligraphic elements, creating a dialogue between personal narrative and broader socio-political realities.

Yahya’s work has been exhibited in prominent institutions and international exhibitions, including the British Museum in London and the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) in Doha. He has also participated in group shows at venues such as the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Sharjah Art Museum. His pieces have been featured in major auctions, notably at Christie’s Dubai, where his works have attracted attention from collectors of modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art.

Currently based in the United States, Nizar Yahya continues to develop a body of work that resonates with audiences globally, drawing on his Iraqi heritage and personal history. His contributions have positioned him as a significant figure in the landscape of contemporary Iraqi art.
