Nizar Sabour

Syria, b. 1958

Nizar Sabour (نيزار صابور), born in 1958 in Latakia, Syria, is a prominent contemporary artist recognized for his evocative mixed-media paintings and works on paper. Sabour’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in the cultural and historical narratives of Syria, often exploring themes of memory, spirituality, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. His distinctive style is characterized by the use of layered textures, symbolic motifs, and a palette that reflects the landscapes and heritage of his homeland.

Sabour has exhibited extensively in major institutions across the Middle East and internationally. Notably, his works have been featured at the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah and the Atassi Foundation, both of which are significant platforms for modern and contemporary Arab art. He has also participated in exhibitions at the Damascus National Museum and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, underscoring his stature within both regional and global art circles.

In the secondary market, Nizar Sabour’s works have appeared at reputable auction houses, including Bonhams and Christie’s, where his paintings have attracted attention from collectors seeking significant voices in Syrian art. His contributions to the visual arts, both as a creator and as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, have established him as a key figure in the development of contemporary art in Syria.
