Nihad Turk

Syria

Nihad Al Turk, born in Aleppo, Syria, in 1972, is a self-taught artist whose work delves into the psychological and existential struggles of humanity. His compositions often feature imperfect creatures, mythical demons, and botanical elements, serving as allegorical self-portraits that explore themes of good and evil. Initially employing a dark palette, Al Turk has recently incorporated vivid hues, adding a sense of optimism to his robust figures. Al Turk's artistic journey began in his youth, leading to his first solo exhibition at the French Cultural Center in Damascus in 1999. He has since exhibited internationally, including at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice (2015), Ayyam Gallery locations in Dubai, London, and Beirut, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Damascus. In 2003, he was awarded the Golden Prize at the Latakia Biennale. ([ayyamgallery.com](https://www.ayyamgallery.com/artists/65-nihad-al-turk/biography/?utm_source=openai))

In 2013, Al Turk relocated to Beirut due to the Syrian civil war and later moved to Edinburgh in 2015. His experiences as a refugee and the challenges he faced have profoundly influenced his work, infusing it with themes of captivity and the quest for freedom. In Edinburgh, he has participated in solo and group exhibitions and created significant murals, such as "Innocents on the Floodtide" at St John's Church (2016) and "A New Vision of Edinburgh" in St Andrew's Square (2019).
