Nasser Ovissi

Iran

Nasser Ovissi, born in Tehran in 1934, is a distinguished Iranian painter, sculptor, and printmaker renowned for his contributions to the modern art movement in Iran. After earning a degree in Law and Political Science from the University of Tehran in 1956, he pursued fine arts studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Ovissi's work is characterized by stylized depictions of Persian women and horses, set amidst geometric patterns and decorative elements, reflecting a fusion of traditional Persian aesthetics with modern techniques. His art often draws inspiration from the Timurid, Seljuk, and Qajar eras, incorporating calligraphic rhythms and vivid color palettes.

Throughout his career, Ovissi has held numerous exhibitions worldwide, including a notable joint exhibition with Salvador Dalí in Madrid in 1977. His works are part of prestigious collections in museums across Iran, Italy, France, England, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, India, Sweden, Canada, Spain, and the United States. He has received several accolades, such as the grand prize at the Tehran Biennale of Fine Arts in 1962 and 1964, and the top honor at the Monaco Contemporary Art Exhibition in 1974. Ovissi currently resides and works in Reston, Virginia.
