Naji Kamel

Egypt, b. 1934–2013

Naji Kamel (1934–2013) was an Egyptian artist renowned for his contributions to caricature, sculpture, and painting. Born on July 22, 1934, in Cairo, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts' sculpture department in 1957. Kamel's artistic journey was deeply influenced by Egypt's rich cultural heritage, evident in his works that blend elements of ancient Egyptian art, Coptic traditions, and Nubian aesthetics. In 1959, Kamel joined the caricature teams of "Rose al-Yūsuf" and "Sabah al-Khair" magazines, where his clear lines and satirical focus on Egyptian social life garnered widespread acclaim. His career also included a stint in Kuwait with "Al-Qabas" newspaper before returning to Egypt in 1973. From 1980 until his passing, he contributed to "Al-Ahram" newspaper. Beyond journalism, Kamel held exhibitions in Syria (1959), Tunisia (1999), and Italy (1997), showcasing his versatility across mediums. Kamel's dedication to art education led him to lecture at Cairo University's Faculty of Specific Education in the early 1990s. He also served as vice president of the Egyptian Caricature Association. His legacy is preserved in institutions like the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art and the Al-Ahram Art Museum, reflecting his enduring impact on Egypt's art scene.
