About the work

A monochromatic etching presents a fragmented, semi-figurative form built from interlocking curves, angular planes, and dense cross-hatching. The interplay of deep blacks and stark whites creates a dynamic, energetic composition with a distinctly modernist tension.

Nadim Mohsen

Iraq

Nadim Kufi, also known as Nadim Kufi Mohsen, is an Iraqi-Dutch visual artist and graphic designer born in Baghdad in 1962. His conceptual art delves into themes such as war, political conflict, exile, loss, and historical memory. Kufi's diverse body of work includes painting, sculpture, and installation art, often reflecting his personal experiences and the broader socio-political landscape of the Middle East.

Kufi has held over 20 solo exhibitions across the Middle East, the United States, and Europe. Notable venues include Bonhams in London, the Station Museum of Contemporary Art, and Sultan Gallery. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions alongside prominent Iraqi artists. His work has been featured in significant art fairs and biennials, contributing to his recognition in the international art scene.

After completing his studies in engraving at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1985, Kufi served in the Iraqi army during the Iran-Iraq War, an experience that profoundly influenced his artistic perspective. He later studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad, graduating in 1990. In 1995, Kufi received a UNESCO grant, enabling him to relocate to the Netherlands, where he pursued further studies in ceramics and graphic arts at the Utrecht School of the Arts, graduating in 2002. He continues to live and work in the Netherlands, creating art that bridges his Iraqi heritage and his experiences in exile.
