Mustafa Ali

Syria

Mustafa Ali (مصطفى علي), born in 1956 in Latakia, Syria, is widely recognized as one of Syria’s leading contemporary sculptors. He is best known for his expressive bronze and metal sculptures, which often explore the human form and themes of memory, identity, and cultural heritage. Ali studied sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus and later continued his training in Italy, which influenced his technical mastery and conceptual approach. His work is characterized by a dynamic interplay between abstraction and figuration, frequently incorporating elements of Syrian history and mythology.

Ali’s sculptures have been exhibited in major institutions and international biennials, including the Venice Biennale and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In Syria, his works are prominently displayed in public spaces and museums, and he is the founder of the Mustafa Ali Art Foundation in Damascus, a key hub for contemporary art in the region. His pieces have appeared at reputable auction houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving notable results that underscore his significance in the Middle Eastern art market. Through his artistic practice and cultural initiatives, Mustafa Ali has played a pivotal role in shaping the contemporary art scene in Syria and the broader Arab world.
